Notes

Undated Newpaper Article: COIN SORTING DEVICE TO BE BUILT IN CITY An automatic coin sorter and counter capable of counting and sorting small mixed change has been invented by E. Lewis, Storm Lake Ia[Iowa], who is visiting here at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Olsen, 227 South Jefferson ave. Mr. Lewis demonstrated two models of his machine, which in appearance is something like a small cash register without keys. Money, fed into a hopper at the top, rolls down three inclines and ends in vertical tubes accurately sorted. There are tubes for pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters and half-dollars. The sides of these receptacles are graduated so that the number of coins in each may be read instantly. Mr. Lewis says his device is capable of sorting $17 in small change in 30 seconds. He plans to start manufacturing them in Sioux Falls and has already applied for a patent on his invention.

[Family legend says that he sold the rights for $3000]
